Protect Your Water

Become a Certified Save Our Streams Water Monitor!

When: Sunday, October 31, 2021

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Where: Des Moines Izaak Walton League

4343 George Flagg Parkway

Des Moines, IA

The Izaak Walton League’s SOS (Save Our Streams) program is the only nationwide program training volunteers to protect waterways from pollution and bring information about water quality to their communities.

You’ll be joined by Iowa’s certified trainer, Susan Heathcote, who will be conducting the training to collect water quality data, chemistry and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates “stream bugs”. As a volunteer you’ll become a trained and certified community stream monitor for Central Iowa!

SOS training is family friendly and sponsored by the IWL’s Des Moines Chapter, Panora Conservation Chapter and the Raccoon River Watershed Association (RRWA).

There are two options for training Sunday, October 31st:

Attend the full day training from 9:00 am - 4 pm

Attend the afternoon ½ day “outdoor” field day training 1:00 pm - 4 pm in conjunction with the online training modules which you can do before or after this training which will allow you to complete your SOS certification this fall.

Going through the online training videos is recommended before (but can be completed after) attending the afternoon field training 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (don’t forget the short 15-minute intro to biological monitoring video), as the online training videos will cover important background and contextual information that you’ll need at the field day. You do not need to pass the macroinvertebrate exam before attending the field day.

Training is FREE and open to individuals and families, but space is limited!

What to bring: Sack lunch, snacks, boots or old shoes, warm clothes & a folding chair for the outside training.
